At a recent UX/UI design project held at TravelPerk's London office, I was tackling a real-world problem faced by their design team. The event, which ran from 8AM to 6PM, was a highly immersive experience that provided deep insights into TravelPerk's approach.
TravelPerk, a leading travel management platform, aims to simplify business travel for companies of all sizes. Their platform offers comprehensive solutions for booking flights, hotels, and transportation, managing travel expenses, and ensuring compliance with corporate travel policies.
The Process
During the project, I was teamed up with two other designers and had TravelPerk expert Ekow Hagan as our mentor. He emphasised the importance of focus while working on complex problems, as it helps to create more effective solutions. Here is how we approached the task:
Understand the Brief Thoroughly: Before diving into the design process, we made sure to fully understand the challenge brief. We had a chance to clarify any doubts and ensured we knew the goals, constraints, and expectations. This helped us to stay focused and aligned with the project's objectives.
Empathise with the User: We started by thoroughly understanding the user's journey and pain points. This foundational step ensures that the solutions are grounded in real user needs.
Focus on the Most Painful Problem: We then narrowed our focus to the most critical issues that users face. This meant stripping away unnecessary features and concentrating on what truly adds value.
Prototype and Iterate: With a clear focus, we rapidly prototyped our solutions with paper sketches and presented them to the audience.
Measure Success: We established clear KPIs to track the effectiveness of our solutions. Regularly measuring user satisfaction, task completion rates, time on task, and user retention will help ensure continuous improvement.
Conclusion
This project experience reinforced the importance of focus in design. By zeroing in on the core needs of the user and simplifying their journey, we can create more meaningful and enjoyable experiences. As designers, our goal is to make the complex simple and the simple delightful. And with the right focus, we can achieve just that.
